Nobody serious still assumes every dinosaur ran on lizard metabolism. Bone growth, geographic range, feathers in some lineages, and chemical markers in fossils all push toward elevated energy use in many groups.
A 2024 study of where dinosaurs lived suggested theropods (think T. rex and Velociraptor) and ornithischians (relatives of Stegosaurus and Triceratops) may have become warm-blooded around 180 million years ago. Long-necked sauropods looked more stuck to warmer climates in that model.
Other papers disagree about which branches ran hotter. A 2022 Nature study, for example, put some theropods and sauropods toward warm-blooded readings and some ornithischians toward colder ones. Methods differ. Details still move.
For a school update, keep it simple and honest: dinosaurs were generally active animals, not uniformly sluggish ectotherms, and metabolism almost certainly varied across the family tree.
