Evolution is improvement of the species, or survival of the fittest
What we know now
Evolution is a change in the frequency of heritable traits in a population over generations. Natural selection is one mechanism, alongside mutation, genetic drift, and gene flow. Herbert Spencer coined "survival of the fittest" in 1864; Darwin adopted it in 1869 as shorthand for natural selection, meaning organisms best suited to their circumstances, not the strongest. In biology, fitness is reproductive success. Evolution is not a ladder of improvement.
