The authors still left room for a small effect, or effects in a subset of kids. What the evidence does not support is sugar as a reliable on-switch for wild behavior.

What school (and parents) taught

By the 1970s and 1980s, the “sugar high” was treated like common sense. Teachers warned parents. Cartoons joked about it. If a room of kids got loud after cake, sugar took the blame.

The story felt true because the timing lined up. Sweets appear, chaos follows. Correlation looked like cause.

What the studies actually found

In 1995, researchers pooled 23 experiments from 16 papers. The studies used placebos and kept kids, parents, and teachers blind to who got sugar. Across the measured outcomes, mean effects clustered around zero: no clear hit to behavior or cognition.

A related trial put supposed “sugar-sensitive” kids and preschoolers on rotating diets high in sucrose, low in sucrose with aspartame, or low in sucrose with saccharin. For the kids labeled sugar-sensitive, none of 39 behavioral and cognitive measures differed significantly across diets.

Later work in typical school-age samples has generally kept the same broad pattern: total sugar intake does not map cleanly onto wild behavior. That still leaves the JAMA authors’ caveat standing: a small effect, or a sensitive subgroup, has not been ruled out forever.

Why the myth sticks

Expectation does a lot of the work. In a 1994 study, boys got a placebo sweetener while some mothers were told it was a big sugar dose. Those mothers rated their sons as more hyperactive and hovered more, even though the kids had not received sugar.

Context matters too. Candy shows up at parties, holidays, and special treats: loud rooms, friends, delayed bedtime, and excitement. That setting can produce a sugar-rush story without a sugar-rush mechanism.

Older theories (food allergy to corn sugar, reactive hypoglycemia, a brief “hyperglycemia rush”) do not match the evidence either. High blood sugar symptoms tend toward thirst, fatigue, and irritability, not bouncing-off-the-walls energy.

What to remember

If you were taught that sugar makes kids hyper, you learned a sticky folk explanation, not a finding that survived blind trials. Party chaos has better explanations: stimulation, expectation, and the occasion itself.

That does not make unlimited candy a health plan. Diets high in added sugar still raise risks for tooth decay, weight gain, and other long-term problems. The update is narrower: sugar is not a reliable on-switch for hyperactivity in most children.
